Best dentist I’ve ever been to. I got all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled and they’ve called to check in and also had a post op appointment after a week to make sure I’m healing good! Already have my next appointment set up and they make me feel like family when I walk in the door. I can’t recommend a better dentist.

Is Tooth Extraction Painful?

illustration of an impacted tooth that needs extraction
Despite common misconceptions, most people do not experience pain during a tooth extraction procedure. In fact, it can be much more painful to avoid extractions. This can lead to more serious oral health problems.

What To Expect During The Procedure

Before your procedure at our McKinney dental office, your dentist will provide you with the proper instructions to prepare for your extraction. If you require sedation, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home, as you will not be able to drive.

Anesthesia

Your dentist will begin by administering local anesthesia to numb your teeth and gums. Depending on your needs, we can also provide sedation to increase your relaxation.

Tooth Removal

Next, we take special tools to gently loosen the tooth from its socket. If the tooth is impacted, your dentist may make a small incision in the gums or break the crown of the tooth up into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove.

Stitches

Once the tooth is fully extracted, your dentist will seal the open gum tissue with stitches or sutures. Finally, gauze is placed over the extraction site to promote blood clot formation.

Post-Appointment

We ask that you bite down on the gauze to help stop the bleeding in the first few hours after your procedure. The pressure also speeds up blood clot formation and reduces the risk of a dry socket. Once the bleeding has stopped, you can remove the gauze from the extraction site.

Recovery Instructions

To prevent complications and help ensure a successful recovery, please follow all your dentist's post-op instructions carefully.

Keep Mouth Clean

Be careful to avoid the extraction site when brushing your teeth for a few days after your procedure. To keep the area clean, you can gently swirl some antibacterial mouthwash or salt water around your gums.

Eat Soft Foods

We recommend eating a soft foods diet for a few days to avoid removing the blood clot over the extraction site (a complication known as dry socket). It is important to refrain from using a straw for the first 48 hours, as this can also cause dry socket.

Manage Side Effects

Side effects like minor swelling and sensitivity are normal, especially in the first 48 hours after tooth extraction. You can take an over-the-counter pain reliever as needed to help manage discomfort. Your dentist may also prescribe an antibiotic to prevent infection.

If you experience severe pain, fever, or other unusual side effects, contact our McKinney practice immediately.

Replacing an Extracted Tooth Premium Restorative Options

Undergoing tooth extraction does not mean you will have to live with a gap in your smile permanently. You have several options to replace the missing tooth. In addition to dental-implants traditional dental bridges, which are secured by crowns placed on adjacent natural teeth, Dr. Khodabakhsh can restore your tooth with a dental implant.

An implant is a small titanium post inserted into the jawbone in place of the missing tooth roots. When the implant heals, it is capped with a custom-made crown that looks and feels just like a natural tooth. In some cases, we can even provide implants on the same day as your tooth extraction to significantly cut down your restorative treatment timeline. Read more about implants, and contact our Mckinney office today to set up a consultation to see if dental implants are right for you.
